Success Tips from Happy People

According to a new study by the University of Maryland, unhappy people watch 20% more television than those who describe themselves as happy people. The study revealed that people who considered themselves to be happy take part in two activities: reading and socializing.

Reading and socializing are imperative to growth. When we read, we take a journey into an experience outside of ourselves. We tap into the intellectual capital of others. We gain new perspectives, insights and wisdom. Adventures lead to growth and curiosity. Happy people like to socialize because this also takes us on a journey into someone else’s world. When we interact with others, in networking or social situations, we make small talk. Hopefully we listen. We learn about someone else’s experiences and views.

Take time to grow your mind and attitude by reading, socializing and cultivating happiness. Individuals who are happy tune out the negative messages from the media and people around them. They wear blinders. They have a positive attitude and understand the value of filtering out poisonous messages that don’t serve them well.

Keith Harrell wrote in his book Attitude is Everything, “For true happiness, it’s best to look within yourself rather than rely on others or the world around you. The root of happiness is joy, and joy lives within you.”

Following Your Own Success Path

Have you ever been pulled in so many directions you forgot where you were and where you wanted to go? You may not have had a specific plan, but you had a clue about the general direction you wanted to go. Having studied goal setting, productivity and the subconscious mind, I’ve learned it’s essential to write down goals. When we write down goals, our minds immediately begin zeroing in on our mark and move us forward.

Staying focused is tough these days. But it’s critical to our motivation and success. We’re bombarded with technology, messages, ideas, news and images that can easily pull our attention to areas we had no intention of exploring or considering. Think about the Internet. If you’re like me, you have “Googled” a topic and in a few short minutes, you wind up on tangent websites and have quickly forgotten how you got there and why you “Googled” in the first place. It’s easy to stray and lose focus.

Successful people are able to stay on-task, regardless of the distractions that beg for their attention. I’ve recently noticed I’m learning so much about new marketing and business development opportunities that I am getting sucked into a vortex of well-intentioned people who want to share their skills, knowledge and experience. In phone calls, e-mails and on Facebook, I am encouraged to learn their proven methods, listen to their webinars and join their affiliate programs. I have to constantly remind myself of the three major goals I wrote down earlier this year and stay the course.

You may want to heed the advice that my coach shared with me several years ago: “Be like a horse. Keep your eyes on the path.”

The One Class That Can Change The World

My kids, ages 15 and 13, are in the midst of taking their annual standardized TAKS (Texas Assessment, Knowledge and Skills) Tests. In New York, it’s the Regents. Regardless of where you grew up, you probably took a similar, often dreaded test with hopes you had retained enough information and critical thinking skills to be promoted to the next grade.

The one class that seems to be missing from every single school curriculum in the nation is a class on self-love. Learning how to truly love and accept ourselves, unconditionally, would forever alter our paths. This one skill leads to success at work, improved interpersonal communication, and a huge boost in self-confidence. Our attitudes come into play as well.

Learning self-love would rescue students from listening to that unforgiving, relentless, doubt-filled soundtrack in their heads that they are not good enough, smart, enough, attractive enough, funny enough…on and on. It’s the poisonous soundtrack that stays with so many of us for a lifetime. It gnaws away at the root of our emotions, hearts and desires.

Imagine a place where the children and adults were free of negative self-talk, deep wounds and heavy hearts. What would your life be like if you had taken a class in elementary school on how to unequivocally love yourself? To accept yourself precisely the way you were created? Maybe our kids could skip a few science or reading sessions and learn how to unconditionally accept themselves, exactly the way they are.

It’s often hard for us to teach this priceless lesson to our children when we ourselves have not fully learned or lived it.

We must learn to silence our own critic and judge (the gremlin) that robs us of our potential, dreams and gifts.
