Attitude Adjustment 101: Nine Ways to Transform You From Mediocre to Magnificent
By Susan Young, President, Susan Young Media Relations, Inc.

“Work on your career and you’ll make a living. Work on yourself and you’ll make a fortune.”
- Jim Rohn

Education is important but your attitude is the best predictor of success. If you search for a field of study entitled “Attitude,” you will come up empty handed. Yet, the world would be a better place if we could all major in “Attitude.”

If attitude is not taught in school, then how come some people have great attitudes and others don’t? More important, how can you change from a mediocre attitude to a magnificent one?

First, be brutally honest with yourself. Take responsibility for your attitude and behavior.

Second, recognize warning signs like blame and pessimism. Your mind operates like a computer; the beliefs you put in become the actions you take. For example, if you think you are “average,” you will be just “average.”

Third, use positive affirmations. Tell yourself daily that you are an outstanding person who will achieve your goals. When the woman at the coffee shop asks how I am, I flash a big smile and reply “I’m outstanding.” Replace negative and mediocre with excellent and amazing.

Fourth, your subconscious mind operates on images, not words. Before sleep, envision your ideal day. What are you doing? Who are you with? Are you making a successful presentation to clients? Are you on the beach playing with your children? Imagine yourself in this moment as if it is happening.

Fifth, write down your goals. List three short-term and long-term goals. Then, set deadlines and list the steps you will take to reach your goals.

Sixth, eliminate time wasters like water cooler gossip. Put your head down and focus.

Seventh, think about someone you admire. Chances are this person determined to be positive and focused. Surround yourself with people you can learn from.

Eighth, avoid “naysayers” who shoot you down or have attitudes and habits.

Ninth, practice these attitude adjustments for at least 21 days. That’s how long it takes to form a new habit.

Your mind is a fertile garden that will grow what you plant in it. What seeds have you planted in your mind? Have you planted seeds of cynicism or seeds of success? Life is better when you have a good attitude. So make the move from mediocre to magnificent!
