Getting with the Program: Online Media

There’s an ever-growing demand for PR and marketing professionals to learn and use new media to increase publicity. In fact, I’ve been hired to teach several programs across the country (trainings and webinars alike) to help PR folks understand how to leverage social media. (Register for my new Teleseminar “Get Free Press: 50 Ways to Make News Now” )

Here are 7 ideas:

  1. Learn Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. If you’re not using these and other social media, you’re missing out on a huge market to reach lots of people…for free.
  2. Create videos. Make a short 1-3 minute video with helpful hints in your area of expertise. Post it on your site and on YouTube.
  3. Gather audio and video testimonials. Let people see and hear your satisfied customers.
  4. Write Blog Postings regularly. All you need is a few lines or a short paragraph every few days and you can create a following. Tie it into your Search Engine Optimization and keywords.
  5. Create Video Blogs. Check out Tony Robbins and his video blogs. An easy, punchy and concise way to get your message to the masses. It’s fun too!
  6. Cover your own events. Newsrooms are so tight on staff and budgets, they don’t cover stories the way they used. Bring your own video camera to your speech or event, get some sound bites and reaction from people and be a “cub reporter”—posting the story and video to your site with a press release. You can blog about it too.
  7. Develop an online media room. Make sure your website has an interactive media section with current and timely information that reporters can easily access. Use some of the ideas listed above to get started.
