Competition in the business world and in the media is fiercer than ever. People everywhere—from consumers to managers to reporters---are looking for value. Reporters, editors and producers have to answer the question of "how does this potential story or pitch benefit my readers, audience, listeners, and demographics? Will this add value to their lives?"

When you write a press release or develop a story idea, it should be based on the premise of what value will this add to the general public. When you send an e-mail pitch or call a reporter, the key to getting their attention is not only to have a compelling story but to have a compelling story that targets their audience.
