A Picture is Worth …..How Good Are Your Digital Pictures?
Buying a digital camera a few years ago is by far one of the best business investments I have made. Obviously it lets me take pictures. Beyond that is the fact that I have been able to get my clients’ pictures, photo captions and releases placed in print publications without having to depend on reporters and photographers to show up to cover our stories and events. As most of you know, getting a reporter to attend an event or press conference these days is not an easy task. Limited resources, staffing and that incredibly shrinking news hole is forcing all of us who want “free press” to work that much harder.

Enter the digital camera investment.

Many of my clients have newsworthy stories that I “cover” with my camera and tape recorder. Our ability to get a great visual or action shot of something happening and to write the caption that identifies the names and titles of the people in the photo will absolutely increase the odds of getting “free press.” When we spoon-feed the overworked reporters the accurate information and high resolution pictures that they need, the chances of our material getting placed will skyrocket.

Forget the “deer in headlights” shot or check presentation photos. Think about what is visually appealing with actions and process. Make sure there are no hidden or blocked faces in your picture. Be aware of who or what may be in the background, like a plant that looks like it’s growing out of someone’s head. Avoid putting too many people in one shot. And remember the P.O.O.P. Awards: “Photo’s that Ought to be Outlawed Permanently.” Make sure you’re not guilty.

Happy Shooting!
