Find What's Missing
Questioning your habits and your comfort zone
in public relations and media outreach is essential to your own growth
and the expansion of your organization’s news coverage. Too many times
we find ourselves slipping into a creative rut rather than a groove. A
few weeks ago, I was driving and listening to a business report on the
radio. It mentioned a business owner from New York who has been extremely
successful in finding a niche in a very overcrowded and competitive market.
When asked how he discovered his “sweet spot” his advice was, “Find what’s
missing.” Brilliant words that are so simple they can border on frightening.
I almost swerved off the road. I literally pulled the car over and let
those three simple but powerful words ruminate in my brain. Find what’s missing. Isn’t that what PR professionals need to do? Scour your newspapers and see what articles and types of stories are being covered. Then, instead of getting discouraged that your story is rarely, if ever, picked up or is better than the ones that are in the paper, change your habit. Log onto some websites of newspapers in faraway places like Wichita or San Antonio and see what kinds of stories they are covering. Look at their newspapers and get your creativity flowing. Which story from a faraway place could be used by your organization? Which story was in a newspaper clear across the country that filled the void that’s missing in your local newspaper? Find what’s missing. Often times it’s so simplistic that we completely overlook it. |
