Writing and curating news for social media business communications

We All Need to be Heard; Is Anyone Listening?

skyhandI am SO not going into politics here with today’s approval of Supreme Court Justice nominee, Sonia Sotomayor. Instead I’d prefer to share some insights into leadership and diversity that affect all of us.

My regular readers and followers likely know that I have known former New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman for 25 years. She’s one of the first elected officials I met when I started my radio news career in Central New Jersey. Whitman would go on to serve as NJ’s 50th Governor and the first woman to hold that position. In the mid-1990′s, I had the honor of serving as Deputy Director of the Governor Whitman’s Office of Radio and TV. Just last month, I had the opportunity  to once again, interview “The Governor.”

This time I didn’t want to talk politics or specific issues. I was interested in her thoughts on diversity in leadership, communication and success. Here’s an excerpt from my interview with Christie Whitman. It’s timely in light of Mrs. Sotomayor’s history-making news of being the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court, and the third woman to serve as a Justice.

“We need more women in leadership roles and government because the challenges we face today as a society are far too complicated to assume that any one group, much less white males, have all the answers. We need more minorities and more women but it’s still going to be tough. What women need to do is be less harsh on our sisters. It’s not that women should support other women just because they are women…we need to bring diversity to the decision-making table because it will make a real difference. In business and industry it is important, in communication it is important. We need the female perspective. We have different experiences and a different way of problem-solving. That voice needs to be heard. We need to be supportive of one another, not blindly, but thoughtfully…Women are often afraid to fail…the guys fail all the time. That’s ok. We need to get more comfortable with the fact that we can fail too. We (women) still need to be at the table.”

No politics. Just a good message. Amen.

How to Connect with the Readers on Your Blog

funny facesWriting your blog is an excellent way to connect with people. It can help to build your credibility as an expert in your field, generate a loyal following in Social Media, and share value and insights with others. You may find it’s much easier to connect and engage with people in person or with short Tweets on Twitter. Writing can be a challenge.

I’ve been writing for 25 years. Here are a 3 quick tips to engage people with your blog posts.

1. Be yourself. Write the way that you speak and avoid “talking down to your reader.”  People enjoy  authenticity more than a stage show.

2. Bring your reader into the post. Ask questions like: “What do you think?” or “What about you?” Connect them to the point of your message. Bring it full circle to get them engaged: thinking, feeling, reacting and involved.

3. Reveal something. While being professional, it’s perfectly fine and recommended to give readers a peek into your personality. Show a brief example of a situation that brings your message home. It can be a quote from your favorite grandparent, a holiday ritual that ties into your theme or a lesson you’ve learned on your journey.

Blogs are your personal podium and microphone that allow you to offer your unique views, expressions and insights. The words will come easier when you write from the heart. Can you do it? Can you be yourself? Remember, when you are genuine, you’ll never make a mistake!

10 Tips to Writing Powerful Blog Posts

piano

According to Technorati, a popular search engine for blogs, there are 71 million blogs floating around. That number has probably jumped since you read these words! It’s amazing to think so many people have so much to say! One of the major challenges I am constantly hearing from entrepreneurs, business professionals, nonprofit leaders and others is that they don’t know how to write their blogs. So they do nothing. Corporations are hiring me to train their staff about how to write their blogs and develop online relationships. It’s no fun being stuck or afraid.

Here are 10 quick tips to writing powerful blog posts:

1. Tap into your expertise. Write about something you are knowledgable about and enjoy.

2. Share value. Don’t worry about giving something away for free.  When you are open to sharing helpful information, you’ll build relationships and credibility.   Focus on building your community. Abundance will follow.

3. Be transparent. Be authentic and avoid hidden agendas and negativity. Write with integrity. Your reputation is on the line.

4. Write in short, punchy and easy-to understand sentences. People are so busy these days that we all appreciate concise and succinct communication. (Hey, look at Twitter- 140 characters!)

5. Weave in your personality. Blogs are not typically written in a formal business style. Blogging is more casual, which allows us to insert our personality into our posts. This helps to build rapport and connect with your reader.

6. Avoid J-A-R- Jargon, Adjectives and Rhetoric. Your readers are probably not looking for a stuffy dry sales  pitch but for something that’s compelling and thoughtful. Deliver it and you’ll develop a loyal following.

7.  Connect your posts with timely news stories. The news provides us with plenty to  blog about!  By mentioning current events (and reacting to them as you desire), you show people you are interested in what’s happening in our world. You can also tie in the news to your business, customers and prospects and create attention-grabbing and timely posts.

8. Speak directly to the reader. Use active verbs and first-person language. Ask them a question or write a statement such as “Consider this.” Keep people engaged.

9. Solve their problem. Providing useful tips to help ease a pain is important (like this!) Think of it as your reader has an injury and you have the medicine to help ease their discomfort. Be the solution.

10. Forget about the length. There is no right or wrong when it comes to writing blogs. Some people post only a few lines a day, others have several pargraphs or a tip-sheet. Longer doesn’t mean better, it just means longer (see #4)

The best advice I give to people who seem to have “Writer’s Block” when blogging, is just get started. I’ve been writing news and ghostwriting in this style and format for 25 years. Practice, practice, practice and you’ll get better with each post. You may even come to like it!
